The Association of Parents & Friends of People with Disabilities “Agios Kirikos”
In Greece, the number of people with disabilities is estimated at 1 million. The term “disabled” includes a broad group of people who need equal opportunities, so that they develop their abilities and participate equally in society. The Association of Parents & Friends of People with Disabilities “Agios Kirikos” was founded in 2010 with the aim to support these individuals and their families in our area. Roula Maglara, president of the association, tells us: “These children may fall short in lessons, but they have other endowments and instincts.”
Ε.Ε.Ε.Ε.Κ. of Galatas
With the establishment of the association the E.E.E.E.K. (Laboratory of Special Vocational Education and Training) of Galatas also began to operate. A secondary school for students from 14 to 25 years old. The school’s curriculum includes subjects such as language, mathematics, physical education, computer science, sociology, art and music. Also, E.E.E.E.K. Galatas provides vocational training in specializations such as gardening and independent living.
The association’s activities
The Association of Parents & Friends of People with Disabilities “Agios Kirikos”, during its years of operation, has been very active on many levels. In 2011, it organized an information seminar on pervasive developmental disorders. Also, at the urging of the association, parking spaces for people with disabilities were created on Poros, as well as ramps on pavements and beaches. Every year, it organizes a bazaar with flowers, various crafts, sweets and lemon products. In addition, its activities include sporting events, such as a bocce tournament, and screenings of films related to people with disabilities.
Unfortunately, Covid measures have resulted in the suspension of all its activities. But the vision of the association remains. And this is the establishment of a supported living home or a day care center, which will provide hospitality to children after their graduation from the E.E.E.E.K. The building of the former PIKPA (Patriotic Institute for Social Welfare and Awareness) on Poros is intended for a day care center when its repairs are completed.
