Programming lessons at Katheti
8 October 19
For the second year, Katheti offers free computer programming lessons to local students. The weekly, hourly lessons are given by volunteer Maria Pateraki, Computer Science teacher at Galatas Junior High School.
Rapid technological developments, Computer Science expansion to several sectors of professional and daily life and the personal goals of local youth; all of the above make them desire to seek sources of further knowledge and opportunities to develop their digital competencies. They have diligence, cooperative spirit and willingness to prepare for their future studies. All these made them start and continue taking free computer programming lessons at Katheti.
The students cultivate their problem-solving competence with algorithms. Meaning they are being trained to describe the steps that solve a problem in a clear, precise and effective way. They also learn the syntax of a programming language. Applying this language rigorously they can implement the solutions to the problems by creating an executable computer program.
Computer programming exists as a lesson in many science departments, as well as in other undergraduate schools. However. the time that the Greek school allocates to this discipline is minimal. A longer education allows children to cultivate their way of thinking, analyzing and developing the problem-solving methodology. This way, they acquire a good background and become more equipped to cope with more advanced levels of studies.
Apart from the free computer programming lessons, Katheti, with the help of its volunteers, offers free Greek language lessons to immigrants, with the aim to help them become more smoothly incorporated into the school community, as well as the local community in general.
