Second year of the action “Adopt a beach”

1 April 22

Agia Sotira in Galatas and Vagionia on Poros are the two beaches that participate in WWF’s program “Adopt a beach” since June 2021. Katheti organized the action, which includes waste recording and beach cleaning, as a member of the Ec(h)o consortium. On Friday 1st April at 14:00 and on Saturday 2nd April at 13:00, the second year of the action “Adopt a beach” begins, at the beaches of Agia Sotira and Vagionia respectively, by a group of volunteers. On Saturday, a representative of WWF’s program “Adopt a beach”, Dinos Tsoukalas, will be with us.

The program “Adopt a beach” is innovative and the Municipalities of Poros and Troizinia-Methana responded to it very positively. It is based on voluntary contribution and operates in the context of “citizen science”. In other words, it is an action through which adults and children come in contact with scientific methodology.

The process

The recording process is very simple. Participants are informed of both the methodology and the safety rules. Monitoring is done two to four times a year. The collected data from all the beaches that joined the program in 2021 were entered into the open database located on the program’s website. Among these data are the ones we collected from our own beaches during the previous year. The knowledge of the volume, origin, composition and seasonality of the waste found on the beaches constitutes a background for research, but also for informing citizens and competent state bodies.

The aim

The information collected may contribute decisively to the understanding of the ways and sources of coastal pollution. The knowledge we gain from this action enables us to protect and preserve the natural wealth of our area. It contributes to a healthier environment, better living conditions and the sustainable development of our area. It is very important that the second year of the action “Adopt a beach” on the beaches of Agia Sotira and Vagionia will take place in collaboration with the Children’s Centers for Creative Activities of Troizinia and Poros. Through this process, children develop critical thinking and ecological consciousness.

From Galatas, Agia Sotira beach was seleceted by the Ec(h)o consortium because it meets the accessibility and orientation requirements set by WWF. Vagionia beach was selected on the one hand because it is geographically compatible with the requirements set by the program and on the other hand because it is located very close to the demarcated area for the establishment of industrial scale fish farms (ΠΟΑΥ). By taking care of the beach, we also state our opposition to this type of development. We are collaborating with the Poros Fight Committee against the industrial scale fish farms, because our vision for the area is expressed through sustainable tourism.
