Katheti in the age of Covid-19
What is a local educational and cultural non-profit organization doing in the midst of Covid-19? Katheti in the age of Covid-19 is adapting, evolving and ultimately developing!
Katheti is a cultural and educational centre serving the residents of the broad region of Poros Municipality and Troizinia-Methana. We support local technicians and entrepreneurs, students getting ready for their future life and all those who strive to broaden their horizons, acquire new skills, share their knowledge and enjoy the wealth of our culture. Our mission is to mobilize the deep experience and creativity our community already possesses and to provide the additional tools promoting sustainable development.
On the 9th of March, we had our last Greek lessons in Katheti. On March 16th, the circulation ban measures were imposed. Globally, people, numb, began to observe the developments and efforts of those on the frontline. Almost instantly, the #Stay_home (#μένουμε_σπίτι) movement begins and ideas for activities start circulating, especially for children, whose schools shut down even prior to the circulation ban.
We stay home – Activities so as not to get bored
Katheti immediately wanted to contribute to this common effort as well, through the article “We stay home – Activities so as not to get bored“. There, apart from our own ideas, we gathered and we will keep gathering activities, tools, websites and whatever we find online. Always in both Greek and English, like all our written material, so that as many people as possible can benefit from it.
Free Online Painting Workshop
Nevertheless, we soon felt this was not enough. Deprived of the face-to-face human contact, which is such an essential part of our daily life in Katheti, we thought of publishing our actions online. In this way, on the one hand, we were continuing our work and on the other hand, we were able to address more people and broaden the social benefit from our actions as much as possible. This is how the Free Online Painting Workshop was born, with the local artist and collaborator of Katheti, Mara Dimopoulou.
Life and Career
At the same time, we gleaned from our immediate plans those that can be put in place online and we didn’t let Covid-19 take our spirit away! The “Life and Career” is a programme of personal and professional growth, professional orientation and acquiring of professional skills; which is at the centre of Katheti’s goals for the sustainable development of the area in which it operates. It addresses teenagers, professionals, unemployed people, women and other groups seeking for their own path in the job market.
More than ever, however, today, we realise that this programme will be more invaluable in the after-Covid-19 era! Global economies are being affected by the measures in place so that the uncontrollable spread of the virus can be reduced and the job market is expected to change completely. Katheti supports people being impacted by the consequences of the crisis mainly in the cultural economy of the local area.
We are adapting, predicting and using innovative methods and new tools, we are listening for the needs of the local and broader community.Katheti in the age of Covid-19 continues.
We #Stay_home as well as work for our vision, according to our principles.
