A taste of the local performing arts
By Olivia Wink
For anyone looking to deepen their appreciation for their community, getting in on the local art scene is a great way to do so. The term “local” encompasses the areas of Poros, Troizinia, and the Methana region. The creative work of people in this area is essential in cultivating a sense of identity in relation to this place. So, let’s take a taste of the local performing arts.
Music
There are quite a few musical performing arts artists local to Poros. Larisa Iasonidou is an older musician and soprano singer, who also conducts seminars on voice and has appeared in a few films. Katerina Oikonomou, another soprano singer, is a young performer with a focus on classical music.
Demos Koumaridis and Theodore Ziras are both current musicians with a focus on guitar. Theodore has a range of guitar technique videos on his YouTube channel in addition to his creative work.
2+2, a group of three originating from Poros, plays traditional Greek music. Sabotaz is another musical group of three, while Marios Karistinos (Krino) produces contemporary music and a variety of beats.
In addition to the local musicians, there are also two international celebrations that organize events related to music. The Saronic Chamber Music Festival is an annual celebration of chamber music, while the Poros International Summer Piano Academy gives people of all ages and nationalities the chance to perform and share their art each August.
Cinema
There is also a variety of local artists in the film industry. Kimberly Barrios is a contemporary actress, known for her roles in film, including Trance (2013). Erifili Kitzoglou and Danae Skidadi are both local performers known for roles both on screen and in theater. Another young actor, Giannis Roussos, is known for his theater performances.
An older example of a local actress is Iro Kyriakaki, local to Athens and Poros, known for her role as Katerina in the film The Red Lights by Vassilis Georgiadis.
Vasilis Kolokithas and John Straw are both contemporary cinematographers. Vasilis has work specializing in live events, video clips, fashion, and documentary, while John focuses on promotional videos and short films. He has a video titled “A Taste of Poros Island” featured on his YouTube channel.
Whether you’re drawn to music or the art of cinema, there’s something for everybody to appreciate in the world of local artists, who provide a means of entertainment and connection to one another.
