Together with Troizinia’s KDAP children on the beaches we “adopted”
The dominance of plastic in our lives has been a fact for years. There are dozens of utilitarian objects in our daily lives that, however, when they end up in the trash, have a direct effect on our health. An important ally in the war against plastic is knowledge. Katheti’s and Ec(h)o consortium’s action on Vagionia and Agia Sotira beaches for cleaning and recording waste aims to enhance this knowledge. This time, Troizinia’s KDAP (Center of Creative Activities for Children) helped us. Together with Troizinia’s KDAP children on the beaches we “adopted”, we collected data that provides valuable information. But we will need to gather data of at least one year to form a complete picture.
Active participation and awareness-raising
These actions are part of WWF Greece’s program “Adopt a Beach” and will be repeated 2-4 times a year. In 2021, the beaches of Vagionia and Agia Sotira participated for the first time in the program and the action has been repeated twice so far.
Thanks to our area’s active citizens participation, we were able to collect the first data from the beaches we “adopted” and follow up on a program that has both local and nationwide importance.
In the second action, which took place on Agia Sotira beach in Galatas, we had the pleasure to cooperate with Troizinia’s KDAP. The presence of our young friends is very important both for the volunteer group participating in the program and for the children themselves.
The program operates within the context of “citizen science”. In other words, it is an action with which children, as well as adults, come into contact with scientific methodology. It also contributes to the development of environmental awareness in children from an early age, because environmental degradation mainly concerns them and their future. That is why it is very encouraging that we did this action together with Troizinia’s KDAP children on the beaches we “adopted”. We would like to thank Yannis Papachatzis, who organized the KDAP team, for the excellent cooperation.
Katheti, actively supporting the natural environment’s improvement and the sustainable development of our area, is planning the next actions for spring 2022! In this link you can see our team’s recordings so far: https://adoptabeach.wwf.gr/teams/ec(h)o.
