Poros Arts Festival – “In memory of Michalis Hatziperos”

9 July 23

The event “In Memory of Michalis Hatziperos”, honouring Michalis Hatziperos and the Vourliotes refugees to Poros will take place on July 9th at 9pm at the open theatre of Syggrou building, on Poros. The event takes place as part of Poros Arts Festival, which this year is organized by Katheti in collaboration with Poros Municipality. In all the events of this year’s Poros Arts Festival, money will be collected for the support of nine-year-old Valeria.

The event is held in memory of the veteran refugee to Poros, Michalis Hatziperos, who recently passed away after living a full life, and was an active and creative member of our society. At the event, the the Municipal Council’s resolution to name a street in the Synoikismos in his honor will be announced.  As part of the event, a recent video documentary by the Association of Vourliotes, in which Michalis Hatziperos is interviewed, praising the hospitality of Poros and his hard struggles to get back on his feet in his new homeland, will also be shown. Also, the book “Ένα αηδόνι την αυγή” (A nightingale at dawn), written by a descendant of a refugee from Smyrna to Poros who lived on Poros and praises her life on the island will be presented.

The event will be addressed by the Chairman of the Vourliotes of Asia Minor, Fotis Karalis, and the director of the Hatzopoulios Municipal Library, Yiannis Maniatis. High school student Adriana Beri will read excerpts from the book. In addition, local traditional music band Syntonon will present Asia Minor songs, with Maria Maroulaki singing.

Katheti is interested in local history and has researched it through the Theater documentation of Poros and Troizinia-Methana workshop. The workshop led to the theatrical play “Passage”, where Maria Maroulaki performed a monologue by Michalis Hatziperos.
