Screening of the documentaries “Until the End of the World” & “Poros Stands”

18 April 24

On Thursday 18 April at 6:30 pm, at “Vasiliki Kogioni” event hall, we invite you all to the screening of the documentaries “Until the End of the World” and “Poros Stands” followed by Q&A with the filmmakers. The screening is part of the conference “Seas of Change: The Poros Summit on Industrial Fish Farming” and has free entry. Due to limited number of seats, you can make reservations at info@katheti.gr or at +30 22980 43825. A special preview of “Poros Stands” for the people of Poros, followed by Q&A with the creator, Mike Sampey, will also take place on Sunday April 14 at 8:00 pm at the same venue, organized by the Municipality of Poros.

Until the End the End of the World

Francesco De Augustinis’ documentary “Until the End the End of the World” is a worldwide journalistic investigation into industrial fish farming and includes Poros’ fight as an example of the battle of small local communities against the detrimental plans of aquaculture companies. Communities in different parts of the world, independently, are fighting against the expansion of fish farms. The film exposes the conflicts for the resources that this industry produces, making huge profits while promoting itself as a sustainability champion.

Poros Stands

Last October, when Tasmania met Poros, director Mike Sampey and producer Kirsten Bacon of LOWCo AU visited our island to film an anti-industrial fish farming documentary. Touched by the island’s unique beauty and the hospitality of the locals, they were inspired by the struggle of our community to combat the devastating effects of the POAY plan. The documentary “Poros Stands” premieres in April and aims to support the community’s collective efforts to save Poros from industrial fish farming.

Similar to the film “The Heart of the Island” based on the struggle of the Tasmanian island of Flinders to prevent fish farming on their shores, “Poros Stands” is an emotionally evocative story of the steadfastness and loyalty of the residents of Poros to protect their beloved homeland. “The Heart of the Island” was an effective tool in convincing the Australian government to abandon their plans to industrialize the island of Flinders. We hope our government will be similarly inspired to respect the will of the local people as demonstrated through the wide variety of voices in the film and acknowledge the environmental damage already impacting the fish farm area.

We thank those who contributed to the creation of the documentaries, which are an important tool in our shared mission to protect Poros. We look forward to seeing you all at the screening!

Katheti actively supports the protection of the environment and sustainability. In the past, as part of our monthly clean-ups, we have voluntarily cleaned alleys and beaches with KDAP Poros, KDAP Troizinia, the General High School of Galatas, and the Kindergarten and Primary School of Troizina. As Poros is threatened by the POAY plan, on World Ocean Day (8 June) 2023, we screened Francesco De Augustinis’ documentary “Saving Poros” and in October we organized the screening of two of LOWCo’s documentaries on Poros and Methana. In addition, we offer for schools the educational program “Why we say no to fish farms on Poros”.  On our YouTube channel you can watch subtitled documentaries about fish farming from different parts of the world, while on Katheti’s website you can find “Fish Farming Information” about Greece and similar places worldwide.
