Seas of Change: The Poros Summit on Industrial Fish Farming

18 April 24

“Seas of Change: The Poros Summit on Industrial Fish Farming” will take place on April 18-19. This pivotal gathering will unite communities, activists, scientists, elected officials, and representatives from foundations, civil society organizations, and NGOs from 4 continents and 14 countries. Together, they will share research and proven strategies for contesting the unchecked expansion of industrial carnivorous fish farms across the globe.

The summit is inspired by the idea that citizens have the right to know the science, partners, and financing behind plans to install large-scale net pen fish farms in coastal communities, and the effects they will have on the environment and local economy. Too often, these facts are conveniently obscured, hidden behind feel-good marketing campaigns and watered-down definitions of sustainability, until plans are well underway.

During the summit, participants will agree on collective actions designed to bring the facts about industrial fish farming to the forefront of public debate. The hope is that, armed with information and inspired by the success of communities that have successfully fought back against the pillaging of their coastlines and waterways, citizens can knowledgeably participate in decision making around the use of their own public resources.

The summit is co-sponsored by the Rauch Foundation (U.S.), Katheti (Greece), and Global Salmon Farming Resistance (Argentina) under the auspices of the Munipality of Poros and the Panhellenic Alliance for the protection of the Marine Environment from Aquaculture. For more information visit https://seasofchange.world/

Katheti actively supports the protection of the environment and sustainability. In the past, as part of our monthly clean-ups, we have voluntarily cleaned alleys and beaches with KDAP Poros, KDAP Troizinia, the General High School of Galatas, and the Kindergarten and Primary School of Troizina. As Poros is threatened by the POAY plan, on World Ocean Day (8 June) 2023, we screened Francesco De Augustinis’ documentary “Saving Poros” and in October we organized the screening of two of LOWCo’s documentaries on Poros and Methana. In addition, we offer for schools the educational program “Why we say no to fish farms on Poros”On our YouTube channel you can watch subtitled documentaries about fish farming from different parts of the world, while on Katheti’s website you can find “Fish Farming Information” about Greece and similar places worldwide.
