Educational Program “Why we say no to fish farms on Poros”
On January 25 the educational program “Why we say no to fish farms on Poros” took place at Katheti in collaboration with EPAL Galatas! The students watched informative documentaries on the issue of fish farming on Poros and other parts of the world that face the same threat. Afterwards, we discussed the negative impacts of fish farming in our region using a worksheet and talked about how we can prevent the POAY plan.
This activity aims to inform and raise awareness among young people about a particularly important issue affecting our region. Poros and Methana are threatened by the destructive POAY plan with almost a quarter of the coastline of Poros and a third of the coastline of Methana at risk from the expansion of fish farms. At Katheti, we believe that young people, as active members of society, should be aware of issues that affect their local community and their future. Familiarizing young people with issues such as environmental protection and sustainability is very important for their multifaceted education and personal development.
We would like to thank the students and the teachers of EPAL Galatas for the excellent collaboration! Also, we would like to thank volunteer Mania Perachoriti for creating the worksheet.
The program is intended for Primary, Secondary and High School students. For more information about the program please contact us at + 30 22980 43825 or at info@katheti.gr
Katheti actively supports the protection of the environment and sustainability. In the past, we have voluntarily cleaned the alleys of Sfairia with the KDAP Poros and beaches in our area with the students of the General High School of Galatas, the Kindergarten and Primary School of Troizina and the children of KDAP Troizinia. As Poros is threatened by the POAY plan, on World Ocean Day (8 June) 2023, we screened Francesco De Augustinis’ documentary “Saving Poros” and in October we organized the screening of two of LOWCo’s documentaries on Poros and Methana, in order to inform the residents. On our YouTube channel you can watch subtitled documentaries about fish farming from different parts of the world, while on Katheti’s website you can find “Fish Farming Information” about Greece and similar places worldwide.
