Musical-theater performance “The Holy Week of Christos Nezeritis”
By Galatas 1st Vocational High School (EPAL) theater group
The Vocational High School of Galatas, prepared for the school year of 2020-2021 and presents on May 18th the musical-theater performance “The Holy Week of Christos Nezeritis” based on the short story by M. Karagatsis “The Holy Week of Prezakis”. The performance is taking place as part of the program “ACTION PLANS New beginning at EPAL”, and is supported by the educational body NOESIS.
In Piraeus of the Interwar Period
The musical-theater performance “The Holy Week of Christos Nezeritis” is an original adaptation of a relatively unknown novel by M. Karagatsis, which takes places in Piraeus during the Interwar Period.
The story’s protagonist, Christos Nezeritis, is an ex-worker and a now marginalized drug-addict. He lives his own “Holy Week” parallel to the Divine Drama, during some Easter of the 30s, somewhere between the big port and the refugees’ districts of Piraeus.
The authorities’ corruption and hypocrisy, the simple people’s faith, the Holy Week’s religious devotion, spring’s catalytic presence, the culture of the underground opium dens and taverns, where the rebetiko music is born, all these together and in juxtaposition, compose the scenery of the hero’s course from death to rebirth, from the deadlock of addiction to the hope for a new, better life.
Joined forces towards the same goal
The musical-theater performance of “The Holy Week of Christos Nezeritis” is product of collaboration among educators of different faculties and students from almost all of the sectors of Galatas EPAL. Teachers and students shared ideas and experiences, processed problems and gave solutions. They joined forces and developed skills around a common goal.
Art and creative involvement
The coordinator of the action plan and director of the performance Olympia Pagoulatou says: “In a time when art is exiled from the Public School, whilst its presence seems more necessary than ever, we chose this path so that we woud slowly regain all the things we lost during the two years of the pandemic and the digital isolation: The directness of communication, the living experience, the human contact, the collaborative effort. With theater as a vehicle, the art that encompasses all other art forms and constitutes an educational medium par excellence. We already feel vindicated thanks to the creative participation and cooperation of almost the entire body of educators and students of EPAL in this action plan. The artistic result of this theater performance is left to your judgement and we hope you will enjoy it!”
