Poros Animal Welfare Society
The animal protection issue has three sides, the social, the public health and the cultural. The first two are regulated by laws and penalties. But the cultural side is related to education, morality and the level of our humanity. Mahatma Gandhi quotes on the subject: “The culture of a nation is shown by the way it treats animals.” In our area, the protection of stray animals has been undertaken since 2002 by Poros Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
The action
Poros Animal Welfare Society, in collaboration with two veterinarians, implements a continuous sterilization program for stray dogs and cats. They feed the animals and provide medication for parasites. In addition, they perform blood tests on stray dogs with suspected leishmaniasis and then, when necessary, apply treatment. They also undertake the care and rehabilitation of injured stray animals. And most importantly, they are searching for a permanent home for these animals. Beside all these, they try to raise awareness and inform the public about the issue of animal welfare.
The needs
In order to reach its goals, Poros Animal Welfare Society raises money through membership subscriptions as well as Christmas and Easter bazaars, social events and book sales. Also, in order to support its work, it accepts donations and has placed collection boxes in local hotels, offices and near the taxi rank.
In addition to donations, volunteering is important. Poros Animal Welfare Society needs the contribution of volunteers for sterilization, feeding or rehabilitation of stray animals. Another way volunteers can help is to foster an animal, contribute to bazaars with a product, or by informing people at the information street table during the summer months.
We live in an era characterized by the need to redefine our relationship with the environment. Our coexistence with animals is part of this process. Respect for every form of life is culture. This is also the reason why Katheti features Poros Animal Welfare Society.
Katheti supports local associations and initiatives that promote culture and protect the environment. Such examples are: the Cultural Action of Troizina, the Cultural Association of Galatas “Friends of Tradition”, the Association of Parents & Friends of People with Disabilities “Agios Kirikos”, the Cultural Association of Poros Women “Poriotissa”, the Association of Troizinians living in Athens and Piraeus, the Cultural Association of Agios Georgios and the Hatzopouleios Municipal Library of Poros.
